Eight finalists for five benches in Hennepin County

Eight finalists have been recommended for five vacant seats on the Hennepin County District Court, the Commission on Judicial Selection announed today.  The vacancies were created up the retirements of Judges John L Holahan, William R. Howard, Marily J. Kaman, Richard S. Scherer and Lloyd B. Zimmerman.

The finalists are:

Kristine Boylan, a partner at Merchant & Gould.  She previously practiced at Meagher & Geer and at Lockridge Grindal Nauen.  Boylan is a volunteer attorney for the U,S. Department of Commerce, a conciliation panellist for the Center for Conflict Resolution in Minneapolis and a Criminal Justice Act Panelis for the Office of he Federal Public Defender.

Marta Chou, a member of the litigation department at Barnes & Thornburg and formerly an associate at Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi.  She is a member of Twin Cities Diversity in Practice and a former chair of the Diversity Committee of the Minnesota State Bar Association.

Nicole Engisch, an assistant U.S. attorney and the criminal division chief. Previously she was a shareholder at Leonard, Street & Deinard.  She is a former board member of the Volunteer Lawyers Network and the Harriet Tubman Center.

Thomas Fraser, a shareholder at Fredrikson & Byron and former special assistant attorney general.  Fraser is the chair of the judiciary committee of the MSBA, the chair of the board of Call for Justice and a board member of the Council on Crime and Justice.

Juan Hoyos, assistant Ramsey County Attorney and a former district and state public defender.  Hoyos is past president of the Warren Burger Inn of Court, the Ramsey County Bar Association and the Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association. He is also the former chair of the Board of Directors of the Resource Center of the Americas.

Carolina Lamas, the executive director and chief attorney of the Neighborhood Justice Center, and a former public defender in Ramesy County.  She is the vice president of the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota and a past president of the Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association.

Bruce Manning, an attorney at Robins Kaplan and adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas Law School. He was a member of the Zoning Board of Adjustment for Minneapolis.

Nnamdi Okoronkwo, an assistant Minneapolis city attorney where he is assigned to the 4th Precinct Station and works on livability issues in North Minneapolis.  Previously he was associate corporate counsel for Best Buy
